چکیده

Epidemiology is the study of large numbers of individuals to ascertain incidence, life expectancy, prevalence, time trends, preceding and associated illnesses, and other factors in a disease. Contrasted to laboratory studies in which the experimental conditions can be controlled, epidemiology examines natural events that may have been influenced by health care, economic, and social factors. Epidemiology is broadly divided into four categories—descriptive, analytic, clinical, and experimental—although there is considerable overlap (1). Descriptive epidemiology deals with incidence, age and sex distribution, life expectancy, and prevalence rates. Analytic epidemiology is aimed at identifying factors that are positively or negatively associated with the illness and hence may be causally linked. Because the events that significantly influence the epidemiology of a disease cannot be controlled, it is important that any bias that may confound the observations be identified and avoided or adjusted for. Clinical epidemiology includes studies that require repeated clinical assessments and/or pathological studies to determine disease profile. Hypotheses generated by descriptive and analytic epidemiology may be tested with these studies. Experimental

Estrogen agonist genistein differentially influences the cognitive and motor disorders in an ovariectomized animal model of Parkinsonism

Objective(s): Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder associated with motor disabilities and cognitive dysfunction as well. Evidence indicates that PD occurs less frequently in women than men, confirming a role for steroid hormones in protection of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons. It is reported that soy genistein, an estrogen agonist phytoestrogen, display neuroprote...

High intake of folic acid attenuates 6-hydroxydopamine-induced Parkinsonism

Introduction: High levels of homocysteine (Hcy) might accelerate dopaminergic cell death through oxidative stress and excitotoxicity. Folate plays an important role in the control of plasma levels of Hcy. In this study, effect of supplementation with folic acid on the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced Parkinsonism in rat and also serum level of Hcy was investigated. Methods: Rats were fed ...

Motor Unit Number Estimation in Normal and Parkinsonism Model of Medial Gastrocnemius Muscle in Rats

Motor units (MUs) reflect the function of the central nervous motor system. Thus, the estimated MU number is a good option to investigate the functional movement disorder in the Parkinson’s disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to compare the estimated MUs number in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle of the normal rats and those with the Parkinsonism. The MG muscle of two age-matche...

Flunarizine and cinnarizine-induced parkinsonism: a historical and clinical analysis.

BACKGROUND Drug-Induced Parkinsonism (DIP) represents the second leading cause of Parkinsonism (PK) in several countries. Flunarizine and cinnarizine are some of the most common drugs that cause DIP. This paper reviews the first description of Flunarizine and Cinnarizine-Induced Parkinsonism (FCIP), as well as the subsequent literature, emphasizing epidemiological, clinical and diagnostic aspec...

Incidence and time trends of drug‐induced parkinsonism: A 30‐year population‐based study

BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies of drug-induced parkinsonism remain limited. OBJECTIVES To investigate the incidence and time trends of drug-induced parkinsonism over 30 years in a geographically defined American population. METHODS We used the medical records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project to identify all persons in Olmsted County, Minnesota, who received a screeni...

Incidence and pathology of synucleinopathies and tauopathies related to parkinsonism.

IMPORTANCE The frequency and distribution of synucleinopathies and tauopathies manifesting with parkinsonism in the general population are poorly understood, thus affecting health care planning and research. OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence and distribution of specific types of parkinsonism and related proteinopathies. DESIGN We used the medical records-linkage system of the Rochester...
